The climate crisis is not a distant threat—it’s unfolding around us every day. What we face now is not a lack of knowledge or technology, but a lack of mass behavioral response. The Finite Earth Movement (FEM) is a global call to action built on a simple but urgent truth: On a finite planet, infinite consumption is not possible. The time to act is not tomorrow. It’s now.
FEM doesn’t just speak to governments or institutions—it speaks to people. To communities. To citizens. But for this movement to reach the scale it needs, we must also awaken those who’ve long been seen as the country’s torchbearers of innovation: the IITians.
And it has already begun. One fellow IITian, Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki — a professor from IIT Bombay, solar scientist, and alumnus — has just resigned from his post to dedicate himself fully to climate correction. He is currently on an 11-year-long Energy Swaraj Yatra, living in a solar bus and travelling across the country with a pledge not to return home until 2030. Through FEM, he aims to bring 1 billion people into climate action over the next three years. This is not retirement—it’s a mission reborn.
IITians have shaped India’s progress in science, technology, and entrepreneurship. But today, the highest form of intelligence may not lie in building more—but in consuming less. The future demands a new kind of leadership—one rooted in restraint, not just reach. One that embodies mindful consumption, not just material success.
That’s why we are launching IITians for FEM—a platform for IIT alumni, students, and faculty to take personal and collective responsibility for leading the shift toward climate correction. This is not symbolic. It is strategic. When IITians act, the country notices.
You can begin by adopting FEM’s TUPEE Climate Habits—five practical ways to reduce your carbon footprint. Take the Consumption Literacy Capsule. Start changing how you travel, use items, and consume resources. Then, go one step further.
Form local FEM groups within your IIT campus, alumni batch, or regional network. Set collective goals. Organize FEM talks in schools and colleges. Guide the next generation to live within planetary limits. Your ideas, platforms, and influence can turn awareness into action.
In this decisive decade, IITians cannot stand at the sidelines. Not because the world expects it—but because the planet needs it. As climate change escalates, the question is no longer who caused it—but who will correct it.
Join IITians for FEM. Let this be your most meaningful innovation yet.
