Indore’s 100-Day Carbon Challenge: Reducing Emissions, Leading Change (Dec. 1, 2024 - Mar. 10, 2025)
A Joint Collaboration of Indore Municipal Corporation, Energy Swaraj Foundation, the People and Organizations of Indore
An initiative aims to combat climate change through a dual approach of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting energy conservation in the cleanest city of India, Indore .
Building on the city's success, the Indore Climate Mission (ICM) is a pioneering initiative of Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) and Energy Swaraj Foundation (ESF) that aimed at addressing the urgent challenge of climate change through local, actionable steps. The mission also aspires to position Indore as a global leader in climate action by focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting energy conservation, and fostering sustainable daily practices among its citizens. Through widespread awareness campaigns and active community participation, ICM seeks to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, safeguarding the environment for future generations.
The Indore Climate Mission seeks to position Indore as a global leader in climate action by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting energy conservation, and fostering sustainable daily practices among citizens. The core targets of the mission include:
Educating 300,000 to 500,000 citizens on the link between energy consumption and carbon emissions, promoting awareness on the environmental impact of fossil fuel use.
Encouraging the adoption of sustainable habits such as reducing electricity and material use in daily life, aiming for a 7-10% reduction in city-wide electricity consumption.
7 Days - 7 Habits engaging multiple sectors, including educational institutions, businesses, government offices, and households, to participate actively in the mission, creating a climate-conscious community that prioritizes sustainability.
The Indore Climate Mission is expected to deliver measurable benefits, including:
Increased Awareness
A significant boost in public understanding of energy use and its environmental impact.
Behavioral Change
Greater participation in energy-saving practices, resulting in reduced waste and water conservation.
Climate-Conscious Community
A more sustainable lifestyle adopted by citizens, with Indore serving as a role model for other cities.
Emission Reductions
Targeted reductions in electricity use could save approximately 800 to 1000 million kg of CO₂ emissions.
